The Green Cross Code is a procedure that helps people cross the road safely, created by the National Road Safety Committee (AKA RoSPA), to encourage road safety in the United Kingdom.
While the Green Cross Code has undergone several updates over the years, the basic rules remain: STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, LIVE.
At Childerwood Nursery we understand the importance of children being taught road safety from a young, that is why the green cross code is built into all of our outings.
We encourage children to participate in the steps required to cross the road safely. We carry out our pre-walk discussion about road safety and the importance of dressing correctly, providing demonstrations of how road safety clothing works.
How do you explain road safety to your child?
- Discuss the necessary safety procedures.
- Role model to your child and follow the rules whenever you’re with your child.
- Ask your child to look for safe places to cross.
- Hold your child’s hand when near the road and explain why this is important.
- Give children bright colours/reflective clothing to wear and discuss why this is important for visibility.
- Point out different road signs, crossing types and traffic lights.
- Promote the use of key senses: “Listen” and “Look”.
Why teach children the Green Cross Code?
Crossing the road is a part of everyday life and its easy to lose focus on safety when having fin with your friends or crossing a busy road with lots of parked cards. By ensuring children understand how to check for safety and cross the road independently, the environment will be safer for everyone.
