This month we celebrated the change of season from Summer to Autumn and began exploring harvest, seasonal foods and we also planted those all important spring bulbs, ready for next year.

Harvesting crops.

The children enjoyed adding crops to the taste-safe mad we created and took part in discussing which crops the farmers might harvest at this time of year.

One child thought the radishes looked like “strawberries”, while another couldn’t wait to tell his mummy and daddy that “we made mud”. The children took pleasure in ‘squishing’ the muddy mixture in their hands and talking about the way it “smelt chocolaty”. One child was particularly fond of driving the tractors through the mud before covering the tractors in it, because “they’d been busy working”.

Exploring the life cycle of a corn plant.

The children engaged with a PowerPoint presentation on an iPad, followed by a hands-on experience touching both sweetcorn and dried corn kernels.

We discussed the textures and the pleasant smell of fresh sweetcorn. Next, we switched on the popcorn maker. The children were thrilled to hear the corn kernels going “pop”. They eagerly sampled the popcorn and observed its transformation. They were amazed to see that while the outer shell remained, the inside had burst out and the popcorn had expanded in size.
