Childerwood Nursery has been praised by Ofsted in its latest inspection, receiving a ‘Good’ rating for the quality of its provision.

The report highlights the nursery’s caring and supportive environment, as well as its commitment to children’s learning, independence, and well-being.

Warm and Nurturing Environment

Children are greeted warmly each day by caring and sensitive staff, who offer reassurance and cuddles to those who need it. Staff take the time to understand each child’s individual needs, following home routines for babies and toddlers to ensure a smooth transition into nursery life.

The nursery provides a broad range of learning experiences tailored to children’s interests, with equally rich opportunities for both indoor and outdoor play. Staff actively engage with children at their level, modelling play and encouraging problem-solving skills through creative construction activities.

Strong Focus on Communication and Social Skills

The report highlights how staff prioritise language development, using engaging activities such as ‘sound of the week’ and introducing new vocabulary in a natural and interactive way. Even the youngest children confidently participate in songs, remembering words and actions while playing musical instruments.

Children also develop important social and emotional skills, learning to manage their feelings and play cooperatively with their peers. Staff are good role models, setting high expectations for behaviour and supporting children in understanding respect for others and their environment.

Improvements and Staff Development

Since the last inspection, Childerwood Nursery has worked closely with the local authority to make key improvements. A new strong staff team has been developed, with clear roles and responsibilities. Staff have received mandatory training in safeguarding and paediatric first aid, with further professional development planned as the new team settles in.

Ofsted also acknowledged the nursery’s swift action following an incident in August 2024, where a child was briefly left unsupervised outdoors. The nursery immediately reviewed and strengthened safety procedures, ensuring such an event does not happen again.

Encouraging Independence and Healthy Choices

The nursery places great emphasis on developing children’s independence, with routines that encourage self-care skills. Children confidently hang up their belongings, help tidy up, and practice good hygiene by washing their hands.

Mealtimes are sociable and enriching, with children encouraged to make healthy food choices, serve themselves, and practice using cutlery. Staff supervise well and create a positive atmosphere around eating and nutrition.

Working in Partnership with Parents

Childerwood Nursery values strong parent partnerships, regularly sharing updates through an online app, social media, newsletters, and parent meetings. Staff also provide practical guidance to support families with key milestones such as speech development and toilet training.

Safeguarding is a Priority

Ofsted praised the nursery’s strong safeguarding culture, noting that children’s welfare is at the heart of the setting. Staff are well-trained, and there is an open and proactive approach to keeping children safe.

A Bright Future Ahead

With a dedicated team, a nurturing environment, and a commitment to continuous improvement, Childerwood Nursery is providing children with a rich and engaging start to their early education. The nursery is now focused on further enhancing its teaching approach to ensure all children receive the very best learning experience.
